Tame Tiger? The Answer Is Always The Same

In a pre-tournament conference near Tuson, Arizona, Fernando-Castano explained that he ”doesn’t think [Tiger] Woods is at his best” and claimed “if I play well I can beat him”. It’s important believe firmly in your own ability whatever task is set before you. There is nothing unreasonable in what he says.  But there is a difference between confidence and competence. A competent golfer can execute the necessary skills to excel in match play and we use the world rankings to inform us about the competence of golfers around the world. But a competent golfer might not always feel confident and one without the other rarely works well. When Tiger was presented with these comments, he replied: “I feel exactly the same way as he does. I feel he’s beatable, too.” A brief glimpse in Tiger’s trophy cabinet will tell him that he is one of the best golfers ever to play the game. He appears to play his best golf when he challenged most. Any challenging comments threaten his self-image and according to self-completion theory, it’s likely that he will seek some sort of social recognition of that identity. We just might see that when Tiger plays Fernando Castano. At the very least, we will some very long drives, but perhaps the flat stick will make all the difference in the end.
